Hope For Kome

I am Pastor Medard Edward Morris, a Kome Island resident and pastor of a growing church in Ntama village here on the island. I have been serving the Lord as a pastor here for 18 years now.

Kome Island is a vibrant coastal community that thrives on the fishing industry. As a pastor serving in this unique village, I have the opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture and observe the religious beliefs that shape the lives of its inhabitants.

Superstitions play a significant role in the daily lives of the villagers in Kome. Many fishermen hold a deep-rooted belief in various superstitious practices to bring good luck and protect them from harm during their dangerous voyages in the lake. From wearing specific colors to carrying lucky charms, residents believe these rituals ward off evil spirits and ensure a successful catch. Despite advancements in technology and modernity, superstitions continue to hold sway over the minds of many in Kome Island.

Ancestral worship also holds a prominent place in the religious practices of the villagers. The belief in honoring and seeking guidance from ancestors is deeply ingrained in their traditions. The villagers often create elaborate ancestral altars in their homes, adorned with photographs and personal belongings of their deceased family members. Villagers regularly give  offerings and pray to these ancestors, seeking their blessing, protection, and guidance in various aspects of life. Ancestral worship serves as a way to maintain a spiritual connection with forefathers and keep their memory alive within the community.

As a pastor on Kome Island, I encounter several challenges in reconciling the beliefs of the villagers with the teachings of Christianity. The deep-rooted superstitions, ancestral worship, and belief in demons often present obstacles to embracing a new faith. I find, however, that fostering relationships, demonstrating compassion, and facilitating open dialogue are effective in gradually introducing Christian principles and encouraging a deeper understanding of faith.

Twelve21 Global plays a crucial role in supporting me as a pastor in this village populated by fishermen and entrenched with deep-rooted superstitions. Their unwavering commitment and efforts help bridge the gap in access to education in this village. By offering free schooling opportunities, they open doors for children, empowering them with knowledge and skills that will shape their future. This initiative not only equips children with the tools they need for personal growth, but it also paves the way for a brighter tomorrow, breaking the cycle of poverty that has plagued this community for generations.

Twelve21 Global also prioritizes the health of the children in this village. Their free healthcare services ensure the young ones receive the medical attention they need, including regular check-ups and access to medications. By addressing the healthcare needs of the children, Twelve21 Global has made a significant impact on the overall well-being of the community, fostering a healthier and stronger generation.

As a pastor, I am deeply grateful for the partnership and support of Twelve21 Global. Their actions speak volumes, reflecting a genuine desire to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it the most.

I can’t imagine the lives of these children without the help of Twelve21. The impact this organization has on their lives is immeasurable. Without Twelve21’s support, these children would not have access to education, healthcare, and the transformative opportunities they now have.
