When Obedience Doesn’t Make Sense

For years, Israel made his living on Lake Victoria. As a fisherman, fiber boat captain, and tour rider, he provided for his family with ease. Life was predictable. Secure. Then he heard about the vision of Twelve21 Global, and suddenly, he found himself facing a question that didn’t seem to make sense:

Would he leave everything behind to serve in a struggling village? By every human standard, the answer should have been “no”.

Why leave a stable income for a job that might not last? Why move from a city with opportunities to a remote village like Bukabwa, where even making a simple phone call was a challenge? Why trade security for uncertainty? But God was tugging on his heart.

His in-laws thought he was crazy. “We will never visit you unless you move back to the city,” they told him. His wife was confused and uncertainhow would they survive in a place where hope seemed absent?

Everything about the decision seemed illogical. But sometimes, faith leads to places that human reasoning cannot understand.

And so, they went.

Almost five years now, the impossible has become reality. Israel serves as a security guard and groundskeeper at Oikos School, and his wife works as a cook, feeding and nurturing the students. They have not just survived in Bukabwa—they have thrived.

“Looking back, we realize this was the best decision of our lives,” Israel shares. “God didn’t just bring us here for a job—He brought us here for a purpose.”

“We thought we would struggle, but God has provided. We thought we would be lonely, but we have found family. We thought it was just a job, but now we see—it was a calling.”

Now, they have made another decision that defies human understanding:

They have built their permanent home in Bukabwa.

“Jobs come and go, but God wants us here. And when He calls, we follow.”

If life was about playing it safe, they would have stayed by the waters of Lake Victoria. But they have learned that the greatest blessings come not from certainty, but from trusting God even when it doesn’t make sense. What they once feared has become their greatest joy. What once seemed impossible is now their reality. Because when God calls, the only impossible thing is staying where you are.
